A settlement agreement is only binding if you've had advice on it from a relevant independent adviser. A pack is not that advice. Acas says your employer should consider paying for it, but doesn't have to.

Received a tribunal claim against your business? GOV.UK says you must respond within 28 days. If you're late or don't respond, the tribunal may make a decision against you without a hearing.

Thinking about a tribunal claim? There are strict time limits. Contact Acas or a solicitor now. We don't calculate or watch deadlines.

Acas explains the law and your options, but doesn't give legal advice. An employment solicitor can. Acas: getting legal advice

If you work for someone.

  • A settlement agreement.

Payments, tax wording, waived claims, references.

  • An employment contract or offer letter.

    Pay, hours, notice, restrictions.

  • A disciplinary, grievance or dismissal letter.

    What's alleged, and the dates.

  • Restrictive covenants.

What you can't do after you leave, where and for how long.

If you employ people.

  • A tribunal claim against your business.

What's claimed, by whom, and the date for your response. GOV.UK says you may be able to get more time to respond if you ask the tribunal.

  • A grievance from an employee.

What's raised, and what your own procedure says happens next. Acas guidance refers to its Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures.

  • Contracts and handbooks you issue.

Pay, hours, notice and restrictions, as they're written. Acas says employers should make contract terms clear.

What we mark for you.

  1. Every date: to reply, to sign, to respond to the tribunal.
  2. Every payment and amount, and what each one depends on.
  3. What's claimed or given up, in the papers' own words.
  4. Restrictions after the job ends: what, where and for how long.

Each point is pinned to its page, with a question to ask. A star marks points that may help you: what the papers say, and the question to raise about it.

What a pack does, and doesn't do.

Does

  • Explains what the papers say
  • Lists every date, payment and amount
  • Marks points that may help you, as questions to raise
  • Writes your questions for Acas or an employment solicitor

Doesn't

  • Say whether there's a claim, what it's worth, or whether an offer is enough
  • Fill in or send a tribunal claim or response
  • Negotiate, or contact your employer, employee or the tribunal

What a first step can cost.

  • £354–£506

Selected court guideline rates for a senior solicitor's hour, inc. VAT: not a market range or a quote.1

  • A settlement agreement

Ask your employer whether they'll pay for the advice.

  • A tribunal claim against your business

Ask for a fee quote before you instruct anyone.

Read it first for £49. Go into the adviser meeting with your questions ready.
